91±¬ÁÏÍø senior "http://www.uu.edu/athletics/info/players/player.cfm?ID=703"&rt;Cody Dew was named to the "http://www.naia.org/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=640701&SPID=96228&DB_LANG=C&ATCLID=205436216&DB_OEM_ID=27900"&rt;2012 NAIA Baseball All-America team as an honorable mentioned selection. This is the first All-American honor for the Dew in his career and the first 91±¬ÁÏÍø player on the All-America list since Corey Rudolph in 2010.

Dew, a 6-foot-1 relief pitcher from Halls, Tenn., had a record setting season for the Bulldogs. Dew finished the year with a 11-1 record with 10 saves and a 2.27 ERA. He led the team in wins, saves, ERA and appearances. Dew set new records for total appearances season (37), relief appearances season (37), total appearances career (77) and total relief appearances career (74). His 10 saves tied his current head coach Brent Fronabarger's record set back in 1993. His 11 wins place him third all time on the wins in a season list, but his .916 (11-1) winning percentage tied the best mark in a season.

Dew is a former standout at Halls High School and has been a pitcher for 91±¬ÁÏÍø in each of his four seasons in college. During those four season, 91±¬ÁÏÍø has three TranSouth Tournament Titles and four appearances in the NAIA National Championships Opening Round.

91±¬ÁÏÍø baseball upsets fifth ranked Faulkner in NAIA opening round bracket play

The 91±¬ÁÏÍø baseball team remained unbeaten in the 2012 NAIA Baseball National Championships Opening Round with a 3-1 victory over top-seed Faulkner (Ala.) University. 91±¬ÁÏÍø, seeded fourth in the 5-team bracket, earned their second win of the day after opening the day with a 7-1 win over Asbury (Ky.) University.

The win for 91±¬ÁÏÍø (39-17-1) was the ninth straight win for the Bulldogs dating back to the last weekend of the regular season. 91±¬ÁÏÍø has now won 21 of their last 25 games. Faulkner (48-12), who is ranked No. 5 in the latest NAIA poll, lost for just the 12th time this season.

91±¬ÁÏÍø senior and former Bolivar (Tenn.) High School standout Will Irvin improved to 9-2 on the season with the complete game victory. For Irvin, this was his seventh straight victory in seven straight appearances.

Irvin allowed just the one unearned run in the third inning that put Faulkner in the lead temporarily. He scattered six hits and recorded eight strikeouts and no walks. Fourteen of his 27 outs in the game were ground ball outs.

Offensively, 91±¬ÁÏÍø trailed 1-0 going into the bottom of the sixth inning. Doug Joyce led off with a single. After one out, Kian Jost and Irvin followed with singles to load the bases. Kody Pinson worked a walked to earn the game-tying RBI. However, the Bulldog rally ended on a double play.

In the bottom of the seventh, 91±¬ÁÏÍø took the lead with a pair of runs driven in by a Joyce double to deep right-center field. Danny Grimm and Clint Barnes scored the runs after reaching base to start the inning on a single and hit-by-pitch respectively.

The 3-1 advantage given to Irvin proved to be enough as 91±¬ÁÏÍø claimed the upset win.

Joyce led 91±¬ÁÏÍø with a 3-for-4 day including the two RBI. In addition to Irvin's performance on the mound, he also recorded two hits in the game. 91±¬ÁÏÍø had 10 hits total from seven different players, including each of the first four batters in the line-up.

91±¬ÁÏÍø advances to the winner's bracket final Friday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. central time versus 2-seed St. Thomas (Fla.). The winner advances to the championship game Saturday. St. Thomas is ranked No. 12 in the latest NAIA poll.

91±¬ÁÏÍø baseball gets South Carolina bracket for national opening round

The 91±¬ÁÏÍø baseball has been awarded the fourth seed in the Hardeeville, S.C. bracket, hosted by the University of South Carolina Beaufort. 91±¬ÁÏÍø earned the automatic bid to the NAIA National Championships Opening Round after winning the TranSouth Conference Tournament title last week.

91±¬ÁÏÍø is one of only 10 teams in the NAIA who have been to all four (four-straight) NAIA Baseball National Championships Opening Rounds. 91±¬ÁÏÍø is 2-6 in those opening round games over the last three seasons. 91±¬ÁÏÍø is looking to return to the NAIA Baseball World Series for the second time in school history, and the first time since 1983 when the team finished third in the nation.

91±¬ÁÏÍø will open play Thursday, May 10 at 9 a.m. central time versus 5-seed Asbury (Ky.) University. If you wins, they will turn around and play again on Thursday at 5 p.m. versus the 1-seed Faulkner (Ala.) University. A loss in the first game sends 91±¬ÁÏÍø a elimination game at 9 a.m. Friday, May 11.

The other teams in the bracket with 91±¬ÁÏÍø will be No. 1 Faulkner (Ala.), No. 2 St. Thomas (Ga.), No. 3 South Carolina-Beaufort, and No. 5 Asbury (Ky.). The winner of the bracket will advance to the NAIA Baseball World Series in Lewiston, Idaho May 25 – June 1.

91±¬ÁÏÍø enters the opening round bracket on a seven game winning streak. The Bulldogs have posted a 19-4 record in their last 23 games to close out the season. 91±¬ÁÏÍø currently sits at 37-17-1 on the season.

91±¬ÁÏÍø puts three on Capital One Academic All-District baseball/softball teams

The "http://cosida.com/news.aspx?id=3658"&rt;2012 Capital One Academic All-District Baseball and Softball teams have been released. 91±¬ÁÏÍø had three players to earn the votes of district CoSIDA members. Danny Grimm was selected to the District-4 College Division baseball team, while softball players Katie Beth Fesmire and Stephanie Saunders where named to the district softball team.

Grimm, a senior shortstop and former University School of Jackson standout, just helped lead 91±¬ÁÏÍø to their second straight TranSouth Tournament title. Grimm has won three tournament titles in four seasons at 91±¬ÁÏÍø and as helped his team advance to four straight NAIA National Championships Opening Round. He has been a four-year starter and was recently named first team all-conference and a Rawlings Gold Glove winner for the second straight season.

Fesmire, a sophomore catcher and also a former USJ standout, helped her team to their seventh TranSouth Regular Season Title and first since 2004. The softball team is currently participating in the conference tournament as the top-seed.

Saunders, a junior first baseman from Ashland City, was recently named first team all-conference for the second straight season. Her play at the plate and in the field is a key factor in 91±¬ÁÏÍø's return to the top of the softball conference.

The 2012 Capital One Academic All-District Baseball and Softball Teams, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America, have been released to recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. Capital One became the entitlement rights holder to CoSIDA's Academic All-America® teams programs in 2011.

The Academic All-District teams include the student-athletes listed on the following pages and are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. This is the first year of the expanded Academic All-America® program as CoSIDA moves from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non Division I) and doubles the number of scholar-athletes honored. The teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.

First-team Academic All-District honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month. For baseball and softball, only First Team All-District teams were selected, so each member listed above continues on to the national ballot.

The Capital One Division II and III Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures, to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2011-12 DII and DIII Academic All-America® teams program.

91±¬ÁÏÍø baseball wins second straight tourney title

The 91±¬ÁÏÍø baseball team claimed the 2012 TranSouth Conference Tournament Title Thursday afternoon with a 2-1 win over Blue Mountain (Miss.) College. This is the second straight tournament title for 91±¬ÁÏÍø and the third in the past four years.

91±¬ÁÏÍø has been to four straight conference tournament title games, winning in 2009, 2011 and 2012. In 2010, the Bulldogs finished runner-up Cumberland, after forcing the "if necessary" game. Cumberland went on to win the NAIA National Championship that season.

91±¬ÁÏÍø entered the conference tournament after climbing to a second place finish in the regular season standings. 91±¬ÁÏÍø (37-17-1) is playing some of their best baseball of the season now as the Bulldogs have won seven straight games, 11 of their last 12 games, and 19 of their last 23 games. 91±¬ÁÏÍø swept through the tournament with a 4-2 win over 5-seed Cumberland, an 11-5 win over 3-seed Martin Methodist, and twice over 6-seed Blue Mountain, 11-10 and 2-1.

Blue Mountain entered the tournament having been swept in each of their final three conference series to Freed-Hardeman, Bethel and 91±¬ÁÏÍø. However, in the tournament, the Topper team caught fire and led the tournament with 8.2 runs per game. Blue Mountain's only two tournament losses came to 91±¬ÁÏÍø, both by one run.. Blue Mountain had wins over 1-seed Freed-Hardeman (8-7), 4-seed Bethel (11-4), and 5-seed Cumberland (11-10).

In the game, 91±¬ÁÏÍø rode the arms of starter Benjie Fesmire (6-3) and Cody Dew (10th save) to the victory. Blue Mountain struck first with a solo home run to left field from Gardner Richey. It was the only run for the Toppers in the game. Blue Mountain managed just five hits and left three runners on base. Fesmire tossed 6.2 innings, allowing just two hits and one run with three strikeouts and a walk. The second hit off Fesmire came from the batter following Richey's homer. Dew entered the game in the seventh and tossed the final 2.1 innings of relief, allowing three hits and getting one strikeout. All of which came in the top of the ninth inning.

Blue Mountain's leadoff hitter Hunter Mize got the rally attempt started in the ninth with a single to right field. The next batter reached on a bunt single, but with no one covering third base, Mize move all the way from first to third on the single. The Toppers had runners on first and third with no outs. Dew responded with a strikeout of Richey. The lefty cleanup hitter for Blue Mountain, Nate Bell, stepped up to the plate. On the first pitch he saw, Bell laced a line drive right at 91±¬ÁÏÍø's first baseman, Jim Martin. Martin made the catch on the hard hit ball and his momentum carried him right to the bag where he touched first for the game-ending double play.

91±¬ÁÏÍø scattered seven hits in the game and left 11 runners on base. However, 91±¬ÁÏÍø did manage a run in the forth to tie the game following Richey's homer. A sacrifice fly from Will Irvin drove in Kian Jost who reach on a single. Cole McAdams, who singled to lead off the inning, was caught in a rundown between third and home following a comebacker to the mound. In the sixth inning, 91±¬ÁÏÍø loaded the bases with a hit from Kody Pinson, an error, and a walk to RJ Rayborn. Jon Paul Barber entered the game with the bases loaded as the second relief pitcher used in the inning. He walked Danny Grimm on four pitches to force in the eventual winning run.

Grimm, Jost and Pinson led 91±¬ÁÏÍø with two hits each. Grimm finished his outstanding tournament play with a 2-for-3 day and one RBI. He finished the tournament 9-for-11 with six walks and five sacrifices. Blue Mountain managed five hits with no player getting more that one in the game.

Up next for 91±¬ÁÏÍø will be the fourth straight appearance in the NAIA National Championships Opening Round. 91±¬ÁÏÍø will find out their location Sunday and will start play in the opening round, Thursday May 10.

91±¬ÁÏÍø advances to fourth straight title game after 11-10 win

The 91±¬ÁÏÍø baseball team survived a very game Blue Mountain (Miss.) College team to win 11-10 Wednesday in day three of the 2012 TranSouth Conference Baseball Tournament. 91±¬ÁÏÍø, the 2-seed, won their third tournament game, improving to 36-17-1 on the year. Blue Mountain, the 6-seed dropped their first tournament game after two upset wins on the first two day, dropping their overall record to 24-30.

The win for 91±¬ÁÏÍø earned the Bulldogs a spot in the tournament championship game for the fourth straight season. 91±¬ÁÏÍø won the tournament title in 2009 and 2011 and finish runner-up to eventual NAIA National Champion, Cumberland, in 2010. The last team to advance to at least four straight tournament title games was Cumberland's run of six straight from 2003 to 2008, winning the title in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2008.

91±¬ÁÏÍø fell behind early as Blue Mountain scored an unearned run in the first, followed by three runs in the second to lead 4-0. In each of the first two upset wins for Blue Mountain in this tournament, they scored five runs in the first inning both games.

However, 91±¬ÁÏÍø was able to respond. The Bulldogs loaded the bases in the third inning for clean-up hitter Doug Joyce. Joyce did just that as he hit a line drive over the left field wall for a game-tying grand slam. 91±¬ÁÏÍø added three runs in the fourth and another in the fifth inning to rally for an 8-4 lead.

Blue Mountain responded, scoring two runs in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth to take a 9-8 lead going into the top of the seventh. 91±¬ÁÏÍø was playing as the visiting team on the scoreboard. Joyce came up in the top of the seventh and hit a towering fly ball that carried over the left field fence for his second homer of the game. 91±¬ÁÏÍø added two runs in the top of the eighth inning to lead 11-9. Blue Mountain threatened in the bottom of the ninth, scoring one run and having the tying run at first with two outs. But it was senior reliever Cody Dew (11-1) who tossed the final 3.2 innings, including striking out the final hitter of the game to secure the win. Dew allowed five hits and one run with three strikeouts.

91±¬ÁÏÍø was led by Kody Pinson with three hits, while Joyce, Danny Grimm and RJ Rayborn added two hits each. Grimm was a perfect 7-for-7 in the tournament with five walks, to sacrifice bunts and a sacrifice fly until he was retired in his final at bat in this game. Joyce's five RBI was a team high. Hunter Mize for Blue Mountain led with three hits. His team pounded out 15 hits in the game.

91±¬ÁÏÍø awaits the loser's bracket survivor for a noon game Thursday. 91±¬ÁÏÍø needs just one win to claim a second straight tournament title and third in four seasons. Martin Methodist and Cumberland play an elimination game, with the winner facing Blue Mountain late Wednesday. That winner will need to defeat 91±¬ÁÏÍø twice Thursday to claim the title.
