JACKSON, Tenn. - 10/8/2007 - The 91±¬ÁÏÍø Reserve Team traveled to Columbia, Kentucky last Friday night to square off with the undefeated Lindsey Wilson College junior varsity team. Before the match, 91±¬ÁÏÍø players knew that they were getting set to play a national power soccer program.
Linsey Wilson showed why they had earned the name of a soccer powerhouse, as five minutes into the match a Lindsey Wilson striker slipped through a tight 91±¬ÁÏÍø defense for the first goal of the match. 91±¬ÁÏÍø was able to regroup right away as a handball call against Lindsey Wilson allowed 91±¬ÁÏÍø' Eric Uruwingiyamana a penalty kick, in which he made good on to even the score.
The next five minutes were played in the midfield, where 91±¬ÁÏÍø controlled the majority of the ball possession. However, a foul against 91±¬ÁÏÍø resulted in a direct kick where Lindsey Wilson eventually deflected a shot into the upper corner of the goal to retake the lead. 91±¬ÁÏÍø responded again by putting pressure on the Lindsey Wilson back line. 91±¬ÁÏÍø striker David Romer's high pressure defending created a turnover in front of the net, and Romer was able to finish to even the score 2-2.
91±¬ÁÏÍø took their first lead of the game just before the half, as midfielder Matt Lynn had a well placed shot find the back of the net. 91±¬ÁÏÍø led 3-2 at the half.
After the break, the game tightened up, as 91±¬ÁÏÍø was determined to keep the lead. Goalkeeper Mike Phelan made two clutch saves in the second half to keep 91±¬ÁÏÍø in the lead. In the 80th minute, midlfielder Rafa Rodriguez scored what would become the game-winner on strike from 30 yards out. Lindsey Wilson challenged late with a penalty kick goal with 13 second remaining to put the final score at 4-3.
The win brings 91±¬ÁÏÍø's record to 5-3-1 on the season. They return to action Tuesday, as they travel to Northwest Mississippi Community College in Senatobia, MS.
