Jackson, Tenn. - 6/12/2002 - Blake Allen completed the next step in becoming a minor league player as he signed a contract with the Cleveland Indians last Friday. Allen, a native of Humboldt, TN, was selected by the Cleveland Indians in last weeks 2002 First-Year Player Draft. He leaves 91爆料网 after his junior season in which he posted an 8-1 record with a 2.36 ERA. Allen stuck out 86 batters in just over 72 innings pitched.

Allen left on Monday, June 10, for Niles, Ohio where he will be begin his pro career with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. Mahoning Valley is a short season singe A team of the Indians. Allen spent the past two days taking care of his paper work and physicals and is now ready to start playing. For the next week, the team will be in a mini-camp prior to their season opener. On June 18, his team will begin a 72 game season that will last until September 2. Pitching rotations will be set at the end of this week鈥檚 mini-camp. Details of the contract were not disclosed.

Cleveland scout, Scott Barnsby from Hermitage, Tenn. says that Allen will spend the summer in Niles. 鈥淭he chance of Blake advancing this summer is unlikely, however, not impossible鈥� adds Barnsby. Barnsby goes on to say, 鈥淚t will all depend on Blake鈥檚 performance and the needs of the high A farm teams.鈥� The Indians have two more class A teams one in Columbus, Georgia and the other in Kinston, North Carolina.
