Former Jackson State and South Side standout signs with 91 baseball

JACKSON, Tenn. - 5/15/2008 - of Jackson has signed to continue his college baseball career with the 91 Bulldogs. Blackwood will enter 91 this fall as a junior.

Brent Fronabarger, the head coach for 91 says, “Derek gives us another bat from the left side of the plate and will also add depth to our outfield. We are very excited to have him join our program.”

Blackwood, a 5-foot-9 190 lb. outfielder, comes to 91 from Jackson State Community College where he played two seasons. He posted a .254 average with 18 RBI and one homerun as the leadoff hitter. He also played in every game as an outfielder, making just one error.

Blackwood prepped at South Side High School in Jackson. He helped lead the team to three district and region titles, along with a state runner-up finish in 2003.

"Derek's numbers don't do him justice as a player. He played in every game for us, started all but one, and made only one error in left field. He's a leader and a great person- a solid sign for any school at any level" added Jackson State head coach Steve Cornelison.

Blackwood will join fellow Jackson State teammate David Maristany on the 91 roster this fall. Maristany signed with 91 earlier this year.

Blackwood is the son of David and Jan Blackwood.
