HATTIESBURG, Miss. - 2/24/2009 - The 91±¬ÁÏÍø Bulldog baseball team earned a tough road win at William Carey (Miss.) University 7-6 in 11 innings. With the win, 91±¬ÁÏÍø improved to 7-2 on the year, while William Carey dropped to 9-5 overall.
Both 91±¬ÁÏÍø and William Carey are receiving votes in the latest NAIA baseball rankings released on Tuesday.
91±¬ÁÏÍø added a run in the top of the 11th inning, and rode five scoreless innings of relief from sophomore Kevin Kirksey to earn the win.
William Carey scored first in the second inning with one run. 91±¬ÁÏÍø answered back with single runs in the third and fifth innings to take a 2-1 lead. The Crusaders of William Carey then tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. 91±¬ÁÏÍø posted the game's first crooked number with two runs in the top of the sixth inning.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, former Madison Academic High School standout Jeremy Stack left the game after six innings of work, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out eight batters. His replacement, Andrew Haley allowed four runs to put the Crusaders back on top, 6-4. Kirksey entered the game in the seventh and got the three outs need to stop the William Carey rally.
In the eighth inning, 91±¬ÁÏÍø rallied back to tie the game at 6-6. That score remained until 91±¬ÁÏÍø's Allen Williams slapped a one-out single to center, followed by a double by Alex Turner. After Danny Grimm was hit by a pitch, Corey Rudolph reached first on a fielder's choice when the Crusaders could not turn the inning-ending double play. Williams scored on the play to give 91±¬ÁÏÍø the lead.
Kirksey struck out two batters in the bottom of the 11th inning to preserve the win.
Huntingdon native, Cole McAdams led 91±¬ÁÏÍø with a 3-for-5 afternoon, including two RBI. Colby Starks and Josh Jones each added two hits in the game. Kirksey (1-0) earned the win, tossing five innings in relief, allowing no runs, and just two hits, with six strikeouts.
Up next for 91±¬ÁÏÍø will be a pair of home games this weekend when 91±¬ÁÏÍø hosts Huntington (Ind.) University with one game each on Friday and Saturday.
