JACKSON, Tenn. - 4/18/2009 - The 91±¬ÁÏÍø Bulldogs swept their season series over the Bethel (Tenn.) College Wildcats with a come-from-behind 9-8 win Saturday. The Bulldogs move to 27-14 on the season and 8-9 in conference play. The Wildcats fall to 13-24 overall and 4-12 in the TranSouth.
The game began quietly, with 91±¬ÁÏÍø and Bethel each putting up a single run in their respective half of the second inning. Bethel then added two runs to their total in the top half of the third inning, to take a 3-1 lead over the Bulldogs. 91±¬ÁÏÍø quickly answered with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the fourth inning, on a two-run homerun by Grant Luke, to tie the game at 3-3.
The Wildcats then put up three more runs in the top of the sixth inning. However, 91±¬ÁÏÍø immediately answer with a three-run homerun by Kevin Kirksey in their half of the sixth inning to knot the score up again, this time at 6-6. 91±¬ÁÏÍø then took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning on a wild throw that allowed 91±¬ÁÏÍø's Corey Rudolph to cross the plate, giving the Bulldogs a 7-6 lead.
However, Bethel posted two more runs in the top of the eighth inning, credit to three consecutive bunts and a single to take an 8-7 lead, leaving the Bulldogs in a position to come-from-behind for the win in their second straight game. The Bulldogs rose to the occasion again. The Bulldogs began the inning by earning two consecutive walks to put runners on first and second base. Then David Maristany laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the Bulldog runners to second and third base. Josh Jones continued his hot hitting by driving a single to centerfield, allowing Rudolph to score the tying run for 91±¬ÁÏÍø, and a wild throw on the play allowed Clint Barnes, who was pinch running for Maristany, to score the winning run for the Bulldogs, giving them a 9-8 victory, and the season sweep of the Wildcats.
91±¬ÁÏÍø was led at the plate by Grant Luke who went 3-for-4 on the afternoon, with a homerun and three RBI. Kevin Kirksey went 2-for-4 for the Bulldogs with a homerun and four RBI. Josh Jones also hit 2-for-4 at the plate for 91±¬ÁÏÍø, driving in the game-tying run.
Danny Alberty got the win for 91±¬ÁÏÍø, moving to 3-0 on the season.
Bethel was led at the plate by Heath Sharp, who went 2-for-4 for the Wildcats with two RBI, and Johnathan Deberry added a hit and three RBI for Bethel. Billy Keck took the loss for the Wildcats, falling to 2-2 on the year.
Next up for 91±¬ÁÏÍø will be a road trip to Waleska, Georgia to play Reinhardt College Tuesday, April 21. The double-header is set to begin at 1 pm. The next home game for the Bulldogs will be Friday, April 24 versus Crichton (Tenn.) College at Fesmire Field. First pitch is set to be thrown at 5:30 pm.
