JACKSON, Tenn. - 5/7/2009 - The 91±¬ÁÏÍø baseball team clinched the TranSouth Conference's automatic bid to the NAIA Baseball National Tournament Opening Round with a 9-7 win over Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) University in the title game of the TranSouth Conference Tournament. The Bulldogs are now 36-17 overall. With the loss the Trojans of Trevecca Nazarene fell to 35-23, but await a possible at-large bid to next round.
For the second straight game, 91±¬ÁÏÍø found themselves as the visiting team on their own scoreboard, the Bulldogs put together the offense necessary to post their fourth win in as many days. This was also the fourth win over Trevecca Nazarene in the last seven days. For 91±¬ÁÏÍø , this was their second TranSouth Tournament Title and their first TranSouth Tournament title since 2002.
Trevecca Nazarene scored first in the bottom of the first inning to quickly go ahead 2-0. However, 91±¬ÁÏÍø's offense answered with a six-run second inning to go up 6-2 in the top of the second inning. Trevecca Nazarene began a rally in the bottom of the third inning, but could only manage to push one more run across the plate, leaving the score 6-3 in favor of 91±¬ÁÏÍø after three innings.
91±¬ÁÏÍø posted another two runs in the top of the fourth inning on a two-RBI double by Alex Turner. The fifth and sixth innings passed quietly before 91±¬ÁÏÍø added another run on a solo-homerun by Josh Jones in the top of the seventh inning to take a 9-3 lead. Trevecca Nazarene mounted a comeback by posting a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh and in the ninth innings, but could not complete the comeback as they fell to 91±¬ÁÏÍø by the final score of 9-7.
91±¬ÁÏÍø was led at the plate by Allen Williams, Alex Turner, and Grant Luke with two hits each. Turner and David Maristany each added three RBI with both hitting a homerun in the contest. Brad Davis (6-4) earns the win with his 5 innings of relief, allowing just three runs on eight hits. Kevin Kirksey tossed 2.1 innings in a non-save situation, to close out the game.
Up next for 91±¬ÁÏÍø will be a trip to the NAIA Baseball National Tournament Opening Round. The location of their opening round games will be announced on Friday, May 8 at www.naia.org.
