Opening Round
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - 5/12/2009 - The Auburn-Montgomery Senators edged the 91±¬ÁÏÍø (Tenn.) Bulldogs, 2-1, in the first game of the NAIA Baseball National Championship Opening Round Tournament held at Embry-Riddle University (Fla.). The Senator's record moves to 35-21 while the Bulldog's moved to 36-18.
Daniel Holder, the Senator's starting pitcher, picked up his 11th win of the season throwing seven scoreless innings after allowing a run in the second, pitching his eighth complete game of the season. He allowed one run on seven hits and struck out three.
Cody Shields led off the Senator's offense with a double down the left field line. He advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt laid down by Jacob Salter, and advanced across the dish on a single by Tanner Williams up the middle, to put AUM up 1-0.
The Bulldog's Cole McAdams picked up his 22nd RBI of the season to tie the game at one on a two-out single down the right line in the top half of the second inning. Josh Jones scored on McAdam's hit after reaching as the lead-off batter on a single through the six-hole.
The Senator's took the 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning as they took advantage of a base runner due to a Bulldog throwing error, which put Shields on second with one out. Salter hit a drive into left field, picking up a double, to score Shields.
91±¬ÁÏÍø's Carl Harken took the hard-luck loss in a complete game, five-hit effort. He allowed just one earned run, while striking out three batters and walking none.
91±¬ÁÏÍø Bulldogs will play Warner (Fla.) University at 9:00 a.m. central time on Wednesday, May 13 in an elimination game.
