JACKSON, Tenn. - 10/13/2009 - The 91±¬ÁÏÍø volleyball team evened the season series with Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) University after a 3-2 (22-25, 25-23, 19-25, 25-20, 15-9) victory at home on Tuesday night. The win snapped a streak of seven straight TranSouth wins for Freed-Hardeman. For 91±¬ÁÏÍø, it was their fifth straight win overall, moving their record to 22-3 on the season and 6-3 in the TranSouth. Freed-Hardeman, dropped to 13-9 overall and 7-2 in league play.
During the match, both 91±¬ÁÏÍø and Freed-Hardeman participated in Dig Pink night for Breast Cancer Awareness. Both teams sported their pink uniforms, while 91±¬ÁÏÍø also sold t-shirts and accepted donations to help raise money for the American Cancer Society. Money raised will be added to similar events in other sports at 91±¬ÁÏÍø and also the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx pink jersey auction sponsored by 91±¬ÁÏÍø to make one donation to the American Cancer Society from 91±¬ÁÏ꿉۪s Relay for Life team.
In the first set, Freed-Hardeman maintained a lead throughout most of the match before claiming the 25-22 win. However, in the second set, 91±¬ÁÏÍø stormed out to a 14-6 lead. But it was Freed-Hardeman rallying to take a 21-20 lead. 91±¬ÁÏÍø answered with four of the last seven points to take the match 25-23. Much like the first set, Freed-Hardeman controlled the third set for most of the way, taking a 2-1 lead with the 25-19 win. Then in set four, much like the second set, 91±¬ÁÏÍø rolled out to an 18-10 lead before tying the match with a 25-20 win.
The fifth set was close with the two teams playing to a 7-7 tie. 91±¬ÁÏÍø scored the next point to take the 8-7 lead and never trailed again, winning 15-9.
The match-up between 91±¬ÁÏÍø and Freed-Hardeman this season showcased the 2008 TranSouth Regular Season Champion (FHU) and the 2008 TranSouth Tournament Champion (91±¬ÁÏÍø). Freed-Hardeman won the first meeting this season, 3-2 in Henderson, Tenn. This marked the first win for 91±¬ÁÏÍø over Freed-Hardeman since the 2007 NAIA Region XI Tournament in Henderson.
Up next for the 91±¬ÁÏÍø will be a conference match at Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) University on Thursday, October 15 at 7:00 p.m. in Nashville, Tenn.
