JACKSON, Tenn. - 11/4/2009 - None of the current athletes and students at 91爆料网 was here when a tornado hit the campus in 2002 and about half were not here when it hit in 2008. But they have heard the stories of how the local community rallied to 91爆料网鈥檚 aid in its time of need.

91爆料网鈥檚 athletes were among more than 900 students, faculty and staff members who worked on more than 60 community service projects Nov. 4 as part of the seventh annual 鈥淐ampus and Community: A Day of Remembrance and Service.鈥 Campus and Community day is an opportunity for 91爆料网 to show its appreciation to the community for its assistance after tornadoes hit the campus Nov. 10, 2002, and Feb. 5, 2008.

Following the storms the Jackson community stepped in and brought food and supplies to the campus, while local residents gave of their time and talents.

91爆料网 cancels most classes on this day each year to allow the university community to participate in projects at such places as local schools, nursing homes and social organizations.

The day began with a chapel service that included a time of singing and a devotional by Richard Wells, dean of the chapel, who spoke to students about importance of living sacrificially.

Following this service the students went out into the community to and give assistance where needed. 91爆料网鈥檚 athletes participated, some with their teams and others as individuals with different student organizations across campus. Below are a few of the teams that were able to participate as a group.

91爆料网 men鈥檚 soccer team spread out into several student groups doing projects, working at a local middle school, and the Salvation Army. The afternoon included the entire team picking up trash on 91爆料网鈥檚 campus and painting storage sheds.

The women鈥檚 soccer team worked on two projects. The first was with Pope Elementary. Coach Brandon Boylan and most of the girls helped out with their literacy program (read to and hung out with second, third and fourth graders). Assistant coach, Isaac Brooks took the rest of the players to Washington Douglas Special Education Preschool where they did some landscaping, hedge trimming, weeding, planting flowers and bushes, cleaning and leaf raking.

The men鈥檚 basketball team went to a local widow鈥檚 house and mowed and trimmed hedges, dug up and replanted shrubs, and broke up a concrete slab.

The women鈥檚 basketball team went to Alexander Elementary school and read to 20 different classrooms, as well as, donated those books to the different classrooms. The books were donated by the education department. They also took some time for question and answer and got to visit with the students during their lunch time.
