JACKSON, Tenn. - 2/27/2010 - The 91±¬ÁÏÍø (Tenn.) University baseball team finished a three-game weekend sweep over Huntington (Ind.) University on Saturday. 91±¬ÁÏÍø held off the Foresters 7-6 for the win on Saturday. 91±¬ÁÏÍø is now 12-1 on the season, while Huntington dropped to 1-3.
91±¬ÁÏÍø took the double-header on Friday, winning 6-4 and 12-3.
It took five 91±¬ÁÏÍø pitchers but the Bulldogs held Huntington at bay after both teams scored early. 91±¬ÁÏÍø again used the first inning to their advantage with four runs to take the early 4-0 lead. Through 13 games this season, 91±¬ÁÏÍø has scored 30 first inning runs for an average of 2.3 runs per first inning.
However, 91±¬ÁÏÍø did not enjoy the cushion for long as Huntington rallied with four runs of their own in the top of the second. 91±¬ÁÏÍø answered with a single run in the bottom of the second to regain the lead for good. Two more runs for 91±¬ÁÏÍø in the fourth put the Bulldogs up 7-4. One run in each the fifth and sixth inning for Huntington made the game interesting down the stretch, but 91±¬ÁÏ꿉۪s bullpen held.
Jared Davis, a former USJ pitcher, relieved starter Andrew Hailey in the second inning. Davis (2-0) earned the win with 3.1 innings of work, allowing just one run on six hits and three strikeouts. Cody Dew tossed two-thirds of an inning while Brad Davis pitched three innings of scoreless relief, getting 91±¬ÁÏÍø into the ninth inning with a lead. After Davis retired a batter and then allowed a single, Kevin Kirksey entered the game. Kirksey retired two batters, allowing just one hit for the save, his first of the season.
91±¬ÁÏÍø managed just six hits total on the day, but benefited from five walks, five hit batters and four Huntington errors. Corey Rudolph led the way with a 2-for-4 afternoon, scoring two runs. Alex Turner was 1-for-3 with a team high two RBI.
Up next for 91±¬ÁÏÍø will be a road game on Tuesday at Rhodes (Tenn.) College, before hosting No. 14 William Carey (Miss.) University on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m.
