Jackson, Tenn. - 2/1/2003 - The Bulldogs of 91±¬ÁÏÍø made a clean sweep of the Capital City Classic in Montgomery, Alabama as they defeated No. 16 Auburn-Montgomery 3-2. Earlier in the day, No. 20 91±¬ÁÏÍø defeated No. 14 North Georgia 7-5. On Friday, 91±¬ÁÏÍø earned two more win over ranked teams as they topped No 5 Faulkner 5-4 and No. 13 St. Thomas 4-3. 91±¬ÁÏÍø is now 4-0 on the season with all four wins coming agaainst NAIA Top 20 teams.
Matt Glass earned the win over AUM in relief as he pitched two innings of scoreless ball and tallied two strikeouts. Corey Engle started an pitch five strong innings allowing just two runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out four.
91±¬ÁÏÍø again struck first by taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. AUM would answer with one run in each the second and third innings. In the bottom of the sixth, 91±¬ÁÏÍø still trailed 2-1 until Garrett Pepper hit a two-run homer with two outs to give the Bulldogs the lead and the eventual 3-2 win. Steve Sweat added another double to his totals. Brandon Jackson went 3-for-3 in the game and Jason Johnson added two hit himself to lead 91±¬ÁÏÍø.
Jackson native Nash Powell earned his first win of the seaosn by pitching 5.2 innings and giving up five runs, four of which came in the six inning. Todd Winchester earned his second save of the weekend by pitching a scoreless inning and a third.
In the earlier 7-5 win over North Georgia, 91±¬ÁÏÍø scored three runs in the first and another two runs in the second to take a 5-0 lead. This sixth inning saw 91±¬ÁÏÍø tack on another run to take a 6-1 lead, however, North Georgia tallied four times in the bottome of the sixth to cut 91±¬ÁÏÍø's lead to just one.
The Bulldogs added a run in the seventh and that held for 91±¬ÁÏÍø's third win of the season. Two other Jackson locals each hit homeruns in the game as Roger Cook and Joel Hysmith went deep. Steve Sweat and Brandon Jackson added a double each. Jackson led 91±¬ÁÏÍø with two hits on the day.
