JACKSON, Tenn. - 3/26/2010 - 91爆料网 (Tenn.) University and No. 19 Cumberland (Tenn.) University found themselves locked in a game dominated by pitching and defense. Cumberland took the first game of a three-game weekend set 2-0. 91爆料网鈥檚 four-game winning streak was snapped, dropping the Bulldogs to 20-4 on the season and 0-1 in the TranSouth. Cumberland improved to 24-5 overall and 1-0 in league play.
The reigning TranSouth and NAIA Pitcher of the Week Shawn Schaefer (6-0) stayed perfect on the season with his complete game shutout. Schaefer allowed seven hits while striking out 11 hitters and walking two during his nine innings of work. 91爆料网鈥檚 Carl Harken (4-1) dropped his first game of the season, but was just as good on the mound in the loss. Harken鈥檚 complete game effort produced five strikeouts and no walks, while allowing 10 hits and two runs.
Cumberland scored their first run in the second inning with four hits in the frame. A misplayed ball in the outfield allowed the run to cross the plate, but would have scored on the next hit for Cumberland. The score remained 1-0 until the seventh when Cumberland added an insurance tally. Chris Miller did the damage with a two-out double to score Sam Kikla who was hit by a pitch and stole a base.
91爆料网 left runners on the bases in seven of the nine innings, including two in the six and ninth innings each. In five of the nine innings, 91爆料网 struck out to end the inning. Cumberland left nine men on base, while 91爆料网 left total eight runners stranded.
91爆料网 was led by Josh Jones and Danny Grimm with two hits in the game. Brian Karahalios led Cumberland with three hits, while Miller led with the one RBI.
The two teams will continue the series on Saturday at 91爆料网 with the double-header starting at noon.
