LEBANON, Tenn. - 3/21/2011 - The No. 16 91±¬ÁÏÍø (Tenn.) University baseball team posted a 10-0 victory over No. 8 Embry-Riddle (Fla.) University in Lebanon, Tenn. The Bulldogs are now 21-5 on the season, while Embry-Riddle dropped to 24-7 overall.
91±¬ÁÏÍø lead-off hitter Brett Pawlan started the Bulldog offense with a home run to lead off the bottom of the first. His second home run of the day ended them game in the bottom of the fifth inning as 91±¬ÁÏÍø posted the 10-0, run-rule, five inning victory.
Clint Barnes and Oscar Depablos followed with singles in the bottom of the first. Barnes scored later in the inning on a ground-out. 91±¬ÁÏÍø added two more runs in the second inning, including an RBI single from Danny Grimm.
The Bulldogs broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth inning when 91±¬ÁÏÍø tacked on five more runs. A throwing error allowed Pawlan to score the first run after he had been hit by a pitch to start the inning. Depablos drove in the second run with a single. Then junior catcher Doug Joyce came up with two outs and two on base and hit his first home run of the season to give 91±¬ÁÏÍø a 9-0 lead.
Pawlan led the way for 91±¬ÁÏÍø with a 3-for-3 afternoon with two RBI, two home runs and three runs scored. Barnes Depablos and Joyce each added two hits. Joyce also produced three RBI. Derek Roof (4-0) earned the win with a complete game shutout, allowing just four hits, three walks and tallied one strikeout.
Embry-Riddle received one hit from four different players in the game, with Steve Sabins reaching base twice thanks to a hit and a walk. Brandon Creath (3-2) took the loss, allowing seven runs on eight hits with no walks and two strikeouts.
Up next for 91±¬ÁÏÍø will be a home weekend conference series versus Bethel (Tenn.). The two teams will play a single game at Fesmire Field on Friday night at 6:00 p.m., followed by a double-header at 91±¬ÁÏÍø on Saturday at noon.
