JACKSON, Tenn. - 3/25/2011 - The No. 16 91±¬ÁÏÍø (Tenn.) University baseball posted a double-header sweep over Bethel (Tenn.) University on Friday at Fesmire Field. 91±¬ÁÏÍø won 4-1 in the first game and then 3-2 in nine innings in the second game. These two wins, along with a 2-1, 13-inning victory on Thursday gave 91±¬ÁÏÍø the series sweep over the Wildcats. 91±¬ÁÏÍø improved to 24-5 on the season and a TranSouth best 8-1 in league play. Bethel dropped to 14-11 on the season and 4-8 in the TranSouth.
91±¬ÁÏÍø took game one behind another strong performance from sophomore Jackson native Jarred Davis. Davis improved to 5-0 on the season and now has an ERA of 0.75. His 22 inning scoreless streak was snapped in the top of the seventh today on a home run from Billy Keck of Bethel. Davis allowed just three hits with two strikeouts in his complete game effort. 91±¬ÁÏÍø was led by Doug Joyce at the plate with two hits. Cole McAdams, Kian Jost, Kevin Kirksey and Martin Key all recorded one RBI each in the win. 91±¬ÁÏÍø scored twice in both the fourth and sixth innings.
In the second game, 91±¬ÁÏÍø scored in the second inning to go up 1-0. Joyce tripled to lead off the inning. Wacey Russell scored as a courtesy runner on a ground out by Jost. Bethel took their first lead of the series in the top of the sixth with two unearned runs. 91±¬ÁÏÍø answered in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game with an unearned run of their own. In the bottom of the seventh, Bethel left fielder threw out the winning run at the plate for the second time in three games. Pinch-runner Tim Anderson was thrown out trying to score from second on a single by Brett Pawlan. And for the second time in the series the game when to extra innings. 91±¬ÁÏÍø scored in the bottom of the ninth when RJ Rayborn drove in Kirksey who doubled to lead off the inning. It was the second time in the series for Kirksey to score the winning run. Kirksey also was strong on the mound as he tossed 8.1 innings with six hits and 12 strikeouts in the no decision. Matt Fike (3-1) earned his second win in the series in relief, tossing .2 innings of perfect relief.
