JACKSON, Tenn. - 4/1/2011 - The 91±¬ÁÏÍø (Tenn.) University softball posted victories of 7-3 and 16-0 in a double-header sweep over Cumberland (Tenn.) University on Friday. 91±¬ÁÏÍø, who is receiving votes in the NAIA rankings, improved to 21-8 overall and 11-1 in the TranSouth. Cumberland dropped to 19-14 overall and 8-5 in league play.
In the second game, 91±¬ÁÏÍø hit four long balls as a team which tied the school record for home runs in a game. Katie Davis hit two, while Katie Beth Fesmire and Brittany Burkett popped a home run each. 91±¬ÁÏÍø exploded for eight runs in the first and four more in the second. 91±¬ÁÏÍø added a run in the third and three in the fourth as they finished the run-ruled 16-0, five-inning game. Shelby Lamb and Burkett led with three hits each. Four other 91±¬ÁÏÍø players had two hits as 91±¬ÁÏÍø recorded 17 hits in the game. Davis’ four RBI led the way, while Lamb and Burkett added three RBI each. Brooke Thomas (9-3) earned the win as Hailee Edwards and Caroline George tossed one inning each of scoreless relief.
The first game was controlled by 91±¬ÁÏÍø as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a two-run home run from Lamb in the first inning. After Cumberland tallied a score in the second, 91±¬ÁÏÍø answered with a run in the bottom of the frame. 91±¬ÁÏÍø added a run in the fourth and three more in the sixth to lead 7-1. Cumberland scored two runs with two outs in the seventh but fell 7-3. 91±¬ÁÏÍø was led by CJ Browder, Amber Hayes and Lamb with two hits each. Browder led with three RBI in the game. Keaton Kirk (9-3) got the win with 6.2 innings of work, allowing three runs, two earned and striking out nine. Edwards recorded the final out to end the game.
Up next for 91±¬ÁÏÍø will be a home double-header on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. versus conference leader and NAIA No. 7 Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.).
