MAYFIELD, Ky. - 4/5/2011 - The 91±¬ÁÏÍø (Tenn.) University softball team posted a double-header sweep at Mid-Continent (Ky.) on Tuesday, winning 3-0 and 18-0. 91±¬ÁÏÍø improved to 24-9 on the season and 14-2 in the TranSouth. Mid-Continent dropped to 8-21 overall and 3-15 in league play.
Also on the day, the NAIA’s third regular season poll was released with 91±¬ÁÏÍø softball in the receiving votes section for the third straight poll. 91±¬ÁÏÍø was No. 24 in the preseason ranking.
In the first game, 91±¬ÁÏÍø and Mid-Continent played a scoreless first four innings. 91±¬ÁÏÍø then broke through with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning. CJ Browder led off with a single and then scored on a double by Amber Hayes. The TranSouth Player of the Week, Shelby Lamb drove in Hayes with a single. In the sixth, 91±¬ÁÏÍø added another run on an RBI single from Brittany Burkett. Keaton Kirk (10-4) earned the win, allowing four hits and no runs with 11 strikeouts and no walks in the complete game performance. Kirk also led the way with three hits for 91±¬ÁÏÍø, while Hayes and Stephanie Saunders added two hits each.
The second game was controlled by 91±¬ÁÏÍø from the start. 91±¬ÁÏÍø scored at least one run in every inning, including three in the first, eight in the third and five in the fifth. 91±¬ÁÏÍø pounded out six extra base hits in the game. Lamb belted two homeruns, while Katie Davis hit one as well. Lamb was 4-for-4 with four runs and four RBI in the contest. Kirk added another three hits along with Davis. Davis led the way with five RBI. Brooke Thomas (11-3) earned the win, tossing three innings of one hit ball with two strikeouts. Hailee Edwards tossed the final two innings, allowing two hits and one walk, but striking out six hitters.
Up next for 91±¬ÁÏÍø will be a make-up double-header at home on Wednesday, April 6 versus Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) at 1:00 p.m.
