JACKSON, Tenn. - 4/12/2011 - The No. 17 91±¬ÁÏÍø (Tenn.) University baseball team posted a 3-2 victory over William Carey (Miss.) University on Tuesday at Fesmire Field. 91±¬ÁÏÍø improved to 29-10 overall, while William Carey dropped to 18-21 on the season.
91±¬ÁÏÍø provided just enough offense for starter Derek Roof (5-1) who tossed seven innings, allowing seven hits and one run with four strikeouts for the win. With 91±¬ÁÏÍø up 3-1 in the ninth, Justin Bryan allowed the first two runners to reach base after tossing a perfect eighth inning in relief. Cody Dew entered the game with two on and no outs. After a sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third. Dew got a sacrifice fly and a pop-out to earn his second save of the season.
91±¬ÁÏÍø scored a run in the first inning to take the lead. Oscar Depablos’ ground out drove in Danny Grimm, who had reached with a leadoff double. In the third, 91±¬ÁÏÍø added a second run on an RBI double form Doug Joyce. Then in the fifth, Depablos got his second RBI of the day to score what proved to be the game-winning run. His double scored Brett Pawlan to put 91±¬ÁÏÍø up 3-0.
William Carey scored their first run in the sixth inning. Both teams left a combined 17 runners on base, including nine by William Carey. The Crusaders out-hit 91±¬ÁÏÍø 8-7 in the game. Zach Magee (2-4) through 123 pitches in the complete game loss, allowing three runs on seven hits with six strikeouts.
Joyce’s two hits led 91±¬ÁÏÍø, while Depablos led with two RBI.
Up next for 91±¬ÁÏÍø will be a road conference series at Mid-Continent (Ky.) on Friday and Saturday.
