HENDERSON, Tenn. - 12/9/2011 - The 91±¬ÁÏÍø men’s basketball team posted their second straight victory with an 82-73 win over William Carey (Miss.) University in the Freed-Hardeman University Classic. 91±¬ÁÏÍø improved to 6-5 on the season. William Carey (5-4), who is receiving votes in the latest NAIA rankings, had their 5-game winning streak snapped.
William Carey opened the game with a 6-0 run, followed by 91±¬ÁÏÍø responding to tie the game at 8-8. The Crusaders then scored seven straight points as a part of a 17-6 run to lead by as many as 11 points with 11:28 left in the half.
91±¬ÁÏÍø slowly began to cut into the lead. After pulling even with William Carey at 32-32, 91±¬ÁÏÍø took their first lead of the game 37-36 on a three pointer from Dani Marti at the 2:48 mark. 91±¬ÁÏÍø led by as many as four late in the half, before taking a 40-38 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, William Carey tied the game twice early in the half, but was never able to overtake the Bulldogs. 91±¬ÁÏÍø extended their lead to 70-55 at the 6:28 mark. However, William Carey did not go away and over the next four minutes, outscored 91±¬ÁÏÍø 15-3 to cut the deficit to just three points with 2:32 left. 91±¬ÁÏÍø was able to hold off the Crusaders by making 6-of-10 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
91±¬ÁÏÍø was led by Anthony Freeman, Jr. with 20 points. Antoine Hall added 19 points and Dani Marti scored 11 points. David Lane recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 assists. 91±¬ÁÏÍø shot 48 percent from the field, 38 percent (9-24) from long range, and 74 percent (25-34) from the free throw line.
William Carey was led by Roderick Little with a game-high 22 points. Brandon Givens added 19 points and Phillip McCray with scored 11 points. The Crusaders shot 50 percent from the field, 42 percent (8-19) from long range, and 80 percent (11-15) from the free throw line.
Up next for 91±¬ÁÏÍø will be their final game before the Christmas break when the Bulldogs host Emmanuel (Ga.) Monday, December 12 at 7:00 p.m.
