JACKSON, Tenn. - 1/26/2012 - The No. 25 91±¬ÁÏÍø men’s basketball team continued their winning ways with a 67-60 comeback win over Trevecca Nazarene University. 91±¬ÁÏÍø improved to 14-7 on the season and 7-1 in the TranSouth. Trevecca Nazarene dropped to 12-8 overall and 4-3 in league play.
The win for 91±¬ÁÏÍø was their sixth straight and 10th victory in their last 12 games. 91±¬ÁÏÍø has completed the first half of the TranSouth Regular Season and sit in first place as they head into February.
91±¬ÁÏÍø led by three points a few times early included 7-4 and then 9-6 with 14:48 left. Trevecca Nazarene posted an 11-0 run over the next two minutes to quickly take a 17-9 lead. 91±¬ÁÏÍø pulled to within one point at 19-18 with 7:34 left, but it was the Trojans quickly extending the lead back to nine points, 27-18, with 5:26 left in the half. That was the largest lead of the game for Trevecca Nazarene.
91±¬ÁÏÍø clawed back and by halftime, were down just 36-32.
In the second half, Trevecca Nazarene maintained a slim lead on 91±¬ÁÏÍø. 91±¬ÁÏÍø managed to tie the game twice in the second half before finally regaining the lead 54-53 on a basket from Leventrice Gray with 8:38 left to play. The teams swapped baskets over the next two possessions, swapping the lead each time. 91±¬ÁÏÍø then took the lead for good with 1:38 left on a jumper in the lane from Anthony Freeman, Jr. After a stop, 91±¬ÁÏÍø scored again on a jumper from Antoine Hall to lead by four points inside the final minute of play. 91±¬ÁÏÍø was 6-of-6 from the free throw line in the final minute to help seal the win.
91±¬ÁÏÍø was led by Freeman with 16 points and Skyler Vaden with 13 points. 91±¬ÁÏÍø sank just three 3-pointers in the game for 20 percent (3-15), including just 1-of-9 in the second half. However, 91±¬ÁÏÍø was able to shoot 53 percent from the field with 36 total points coming in the paint. 91±¬ÁÏÍø added 63 percent (12-19) shooting from the free throw line, and was 10-of-14 in the second half.
Trevecca Nazarene was led by Eric Orr with 16 points and 10 rebounds. JP Nyadaro added 12 points. The Trojans shot 39 percent from the field, 50 percent (6-12) from long range, and 86 percent (7-10) from the free throw line.
Up next for 91±¬ÁÏÍø will be a non-conference road game at William Carey (Miss.) Saturday, Jan. 28 at 3:00 p.m. 91±¬ÁÏÍø topped William Carey 82-73 in a game before Christmas on a neutral floor.
