JACKSON, Tenn. - 3/26/2012 - The No. 11 91±¬ÁÏÍø softball split a double-header with Bethel University Monday night at Fesmire Field. 91±¬ÁÏÍø won the first game 5-3 and lost the second game 8-6. 91±¬ÁÏÍø is now 25-6 overall and 11-1 in conference. Bethel is 10-12 overall and 5-9 in conference play.
In game one Brooke Thomas (12-4) went the distance giving up five hits, three runs, two earned runs while striking out nine. 91±¬ÁÏÍø started off with the lead-off hitter Tobie Joy being hit by a pitch. She came around to score when Stephanie Saunders hit a double to deep left field.
The score stayed the same until the top of the fourth inning when Bethel scored in back-to-back innings to lead 3-1.
Then, in sixth inning the bats came alive up for the Lady Bulldogs, scoring four runs on five hits. Three of the runs came off a base clearing double by Shelby Lamb.
In game two, freshman Kelly Robey (11-2) had the start. She lasting a third of an inning, giving up three runs including the first home run given up by any 91±¬ÁÏÍø pitcher this year. Caroline George came in for relief and went 4.1 innings, giving up two runs.
Offensively, 91±¬ÁÏÍø cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the second off of a couple of errors by the Lady Wildcats. Bethel maintained the lead for the rest of the game, despite 91±¬ÁÏÍø posting rally in the late innings.
In the sixth, freshman Alex Williams for 91±¬ÁÏÍø hit a two run homerun to get things going 91±¬ÁÏÍø cut the lead to one at 7-6. Then in the seventh, both teams got a run as Bethel held on to win 8-7. 91±¬ÁÏÍø had tying run on third and winning run on first when the final out was made in the bottom of the seventh.
Up next for the Lady Bulldogs will be a double-header at Trevecca Nazerene University, Friday March 30, and then Saturday March 31 a double-header at Cumberland University.
