McKENZIE, Tenn. - 4/4/2012 - The No. 12 91±¬ÁÏÍø softball team posted a double-header sweep at Bethel University Wednesday afternoon. 91±¬ÁÏÍø won the first game 5-1 and then took the second game 15-7. 91±¬ÁÏÍø improved to 30-7 on the season and 16-2 in the TranSouth. Bethel dropped to 12-16 overall and 7-13 in league play.
91±¬ÁÏÍø has now won five straight games and have reached the 30-win mark on the season. This is the best season record through 37 games since a 31-6 start in the 2005 season. In 2005, 91±¬ÁÏÍø made their most recent appearance in the NAIA National Tournament.
Huntingdon native Brooke Thomas (15-5) led 91±¬ÁÏÍø to a win with a dominating pitching performance. Thomas tossed a complete game, allowing just one run on five hits with nine strikeouts. Offensive, 91±¬ÁÏÍø scored three runs in the first before adding two insurance runs late in the game. Katie Davis led 91±¬ÁÏÍø with a 3-for-3 day, including three RBI and a run scored. Alex Williams and Thomas added two hits and one RBI each. Sydney McMillin for Bethel took the loss, allowing all five runs on eight hits in six innings of work. Amanda Renfroe led Bethel with two hits and one RBI.
In game two, offense was on display. 91±¬ÁÏÍø pounded out 17 hits in the game, while Bethel recorded seven hits. The game was scoreless until the third inning. Both teams scored five runs each in the third inning. 91±¬ÁÏÍø added four more in the fourth and scored six in the seventh inning. Bethel added two in the fourth. Four home runs were hit in the game, including three from 91±¬ÁÏÍø. Thomas, Stephanie Saunders and DeShuni Sanders all homered for 91±¬ÁÏÍø. Shelby Lamb and Saunders led the way with three hits each. Lamb, Saunders and Sanders each led with three RBI each. Eight of the nine starters for 91±¬ÁÏÍø recorded a hit, and seven of the nine starters recorded at least one RBI. Thomas took the win in relief, tossing the final four innings of work. Kelly Robey started, allowing seven runs in just three innings of work.
Up next for 91±¬ÁÏÍø will be a home TranSouth double-header, Thursday, April 5 at 4:00 p.m. versus Martin Methodist.
