No. 12 91±¬ÁÏÍø clinches regular season title with split at FHU

HENDERSON, Tenn. - 4/17/2012 - The No. 12 91±¬ÁÏÍø softball team earned double-header split at Freed-Hardeman University Tuesday night. 91±¬ÁÏÍø struck first with an 11-1 win in the game one, but fell 7-2 in the second game. 91±¬ÁÏÍø improved to 36-9 on the season and a league best 22-4 in TranSouth play. Freed-Hardeman is 20-19 overall and 13-13 in league play.

With the 11-1 win in the first game, 91±¬ÁÏÍø clinched the regular season banner and No. 1 seed in the TranSouth Conference Tournament, May 2-4 in Jackson at the West Tennessee Healthcare Sportsplex. 91±¬ÁÏÍø (21-3 counting TSAC record) has four countable TranSouth games remaining and hold a five game lead over their next closest competitor, Martin Methodist (12-8 counting TSAC record). The games versus Trevecca Nazarene will not count in the final standings with Trevecca Nazarene not being post season eligible.

91±¬ÁÏÍø jumped out with five runs in the first inning and pounded out 13 hits in the game for the 11-1 win. 91±¬ÁÏÍø added four runs in the third and two in the fourth to lead 11-0. Freed-Hardeman got a run in the fourth, but nothing else and 91±¬ÁÏÍø won the run-ruled shortened game, 11-1. 91±¬ÁÏÍø was led by Stephanie Saunders with a 3-for-3 game. Katie Davis, Jenyce Spence and Katie Beth Fesmire each added two hits. Brooke Thomas, Fesmire and Toby Joy led with two RBI each. Thomas (17-6) earned the win, tossing five innings, allowing one run on three hits with four strikeouts. Karama Trice took the loss, giving up all 11 runs on 13 hits with one strikeout in five innings.

Game two started with Freed-Hardeman jumping out with four runs in the first. 91±¬ÁÏÍø gave up just three earned runs in the game as the Lady Bulldogs struggled defensively with seven errors in the game. Kelly Robey (16-3) took the tough loss, allowing six runs on five hits, but just two earned runs with five strikeouts. Caroline George tossed 1.1 inning of relief, allowing one run on two hits with two strikeouts. Sarah Elizabeth Cousar (14-5) earned the win, allowing just two runs on five hits with four strikeouts. 91±¬ÁÏÍø got two hits from Shelby Lamb to lead the team.

Up next for 91±¬ÁÏÍø will be a home double-header versus Trevecca Nazarene Thursday at 2:00 p.m.
