JACKSON, Tenn. - 4/21/2012 - The 91±¬ÁÏÍø baseball team posted a double-header sweep over Indiana University Southeast Saturday afternoon at Fesmire Field. 91±¬ÁÏÍø won the first game 8-1 and then took game two 4-3. This sweep capped off a weekend series sweep over Indiana-Southeast for 91±¬ÁÏÍø as the Bulldogs won 8-1 and 7-1 Friday night.
The second win Saturday put 91±¬ÁÏÍø at the 30-win mark on the season. The Bulldogs are now 30-16-1 on the season, while Indiana-Southeast dropped to 23-25 overall.
91±¬ÁÏÍø jumped out early in the first game and never looked back. 91±¬ÁÏÍø scored four times in the first. Doug Joyce got it started for 91±¬ÁÏÍø with an RBI single. Will Irvin added a sacrifice fly in the inning as well. Indiana-Southeast scored in the fifth to cut the deficit to 4-1, but 91±¬ÁÏÍø responded with three more runs in the bottom of the fifth. A pair of RBI singles, one by Cole McAdams and one from Irvin, followed by an RBI on a ground out from RJ Rayborn produced the insurance runs. Jacob Alexander (2-1) earned the win, tossing five innings, allowing one run on five hits with two strikeouts. Cody Dew and David Leisey combined to toss two innings of perfect relief. Joyce and Irving led 91±¬ÁÏÍø with two RBI each, while Danny Grimm and Brett Pawlan led 91±¬ÁÏÍø with a pair of hits and a pair of runs each.
In game two, Indiana-Southeast scored single runs in each the third, fourth and fifth innings. 91±¬ÁÏÍø rallied with two runs in the third to take the lead and single runs in the fourth and sixth innings to regain a one run lead each time. McAdams’ two-RBI single in the third put 91±¬ÁÏÍø on the board and into the lead. A sacrifice fly by Kian Jost in the fourth scored the courtesy runner Wacey Russell. Russell, again courtesy running, advanced to second, then third, then scored on three wild pitches in the sixth to give 91±¬ÁÏÍø the lead for good. Benjie Fesmire started and lasted 4.2 innings, allowing three runs on five hits with a strikeout. Dew (10-0) tossed 2.1 innings of one hit relief with two strikeouts to earn the win. Pawlan led 91±¬ÁÏÍø with two hits and McAdams two RBI was a team best in game two.
Pawlan had four hits in the day. In doing so, he has extended his hit streak to nine games. He has hit safely in 12 of his last 13 games and 17 of list last 19. Pawlan his hitting .515 during his nine game hit streak and is hitting .477 in his last 19 games.
Dew, who just recently broke the 91±¬ÁÏÍø appearance record for a pitcher, now has 28 appearances on the season. He also has 10 wins, which is the first Bulldog to reach double-figure wins since former assistant coach Joseph Talley did so in 2002. Dew is also just three wins shy of the record for wins in a season of 13, held by current head coach Brent Fronagarger.
