JACKSON, Tenn. - 4/28/2012 - The No. 15 91±¬ÁÏÍø softball team closed out the regular season with a double-header sweep over Martin Methodist College. 91±¬ÁÏÍø, who had already clinched the TranSouth Regular Season Title, won the first game 2-1 and took the second game 3-2.
With the two wins, 91±¬ÁÏÍø reached the 40-win mark on the season for the first time since 2007 (40). 91±¬ÁÏÍø is now 41-10 overall and finished 27-5 in the TranSouth. Martin Methodist, who is receiving votes in the latest NAIA polls, dropped to 37-19 overall and 20-10 in league play.
In the second game, 91±¬ÁÏÍø was down 2-0 after Martin Methodist scored once each in the first two innings. 91±¬ÁÏÍø answered back with a pair of runs in the third to tie the game. The score stayed at 2-2 until the bottom of the seventh. 91±¬ÁÏ꿉۪s Shelby Lamb led off with a double. After a sacrifice bunt from Stephanie Saunders moved Lamb to third, Katie Davis hit the first pitch she saw into left field for the game-winning hit. Kelly Robey (18-4) pitched out of trouble all game, but earned the win allowing two runs on eight hits with six strikeouts. Lamb and Davis led 91±¬ÁÏÍø with three hits each.
The first game had 91±¬ÁÏÍø going on top 2-0 after single runs in the second and third innings. Martin Methodist scored once in the fifth, but 91±¬ÁÏÍø held on for the win. Brooke Thomas (20-6) allowed just one run on four hits with five strikeouts in the game. 91±¬ÁÏÍø left numerous scoring opportunities on the bases as the Lady Bulldogs had seven hits, four walks and left 10 runners on base. Alex Williams and Lamb led 91±¬ÁÏÍø with two hits. Jenyce Spence and Tobie Joy had one RBI each for 91±¬ÁÏÍø.
Up next for 91±¬ÁÏÍø will be the TranSouth Conference Tournament, May 2-4 at the West Tennessee Healthcare Sportsplex in Jackson. 91±¬ÁÏÍø will be the tournament’s top seed and will play 8-seed Lyon (Ark.) at 7:30 p.m. May 2.
