JACKSON, Tenn. - 2/26/2005 - The 91±¬ÁÏÍø Bulldogs defeated Freed-Hardeman University 83-67, and in doing so, clinched at least a tie for the 2005 TranSouth Conference Regular Season Championship. With their 10th straight win, 91±¬ÁÏÍø improved to 22-7 overall and 8-1 in league play.
91±¬ÁÏÍø has one more game left as they will complete the suspended game on Monday, Feb. 28 at Trevecca Nazarene at 7:00 pm. 91±¬ÁÏÍø is currenlty 8-1 in league play and Trevecca Nazarene is 7-2. With a win, 91±¬ÁÏÍø will win the regular season championship outright. Should Trevecca Nazarene win, both teams will have an 8-2 league record and will be named co-champions. However, Trevecca Nazarene would earn the No. 1 seed in next week's conference tournament by way of the tie breaker system.
In the win over Freed-Hardeman, 91±¬ÁÏÍø trailed much of the first half, however, used a late rally to take a 40-33 halftime lead. Looking back, 91±¬ÁÏÍø led 42-16 at the half in the win at 91±¬ÁÏÍø earlier in the season. The second half belong to 91±¬ÁÏÍø as they tallied 43 more points to earn the 16-point win. 91±¬ÁÏÍø was led with six players in double-figures including Pierry Valmera with 18 points, Corey Burkett with 15 points, Ben Frederick with 15 points, Marcus Cooper with 14 points, Michael Palmer with 11 points, and Bruno Martinessi with 10 points. Cooper made 4-of-5 three pointers in the game. 91±¬ÁÏÍø posted 47% from the field including 45% (9-20) from behind the arc.
Freed-Hardeman was led by Esmire Guzonjic with 15 poits and 11 rebounds. Josh Haislip and Clint Haynes added 10 points each. Freed shot 41% from the field and just 19% (3-16) from behind the arc.
91±¬ÁÏÍø's men will play next on Monday night at Trevecca Nazarene to complete the suspended game at 7:00 pm. This game will start with Trevecca Nazarene leading 20-14 with 9:02 left in the first half.
