Jackson, Tenn. - 3/5/2002 - For the second game in a row, the 91±¬ÁÏÍø Bulldogs won in overtime, but this win crowns them as 2002 TranSouth Champions. 91±¬ÁÏÍø defeated Martin Methodist 68-61 in overtime to up their record to 30-4 on the season.
91±¬ÁÏÍø senior Robert Joseph once again proves why he was this seasons TranSouth Conference Player of the Year as he tallied his season high 42 points, including 24 in the second half. Joseph also added 14 rebounds and seven blocks to complete his double-double. He was 12-19 from the field and was 18-28 from the free throw line, including 12-18 in the second half.
Martin Methodist (25-8) led 35-27 at the half, but 91±¬ÁÏÍø began the second half on a 14-4 run to take the lead at 41-39. It was back and forth for a while until 91±¬ÁÏÍø to a five point lead with less that two minutes remaining. A three pointer by Martin Methodist’s Ricky Wood and free-throws by Desmond Allison tied the ballgame at 58 all. Junior guard Michael Katrosh, the hero for 91±¬ÁÏÍø twice already this season had the final shot for 91±¬ÁÏÍø that hit the front of the rim, sending the championship game into overtime. In overtime it was all 91±¬ÁÏÍø as they outscored Martin Methodist 10-3 to bring home their first title since 1999.
Joseph’s 42 points was the only Bulldog to tally double figures. Bruno Martinessi added seven, Chima Abakwue and Will Harris each added six.
Martin Methodist was paced by Ricky Wood with 14 points and Johnny Goodman with 10. Shirey and King added nine each.
91±¬ÁÏÍø will take the automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament with a top three seed. Martin Methodist will represent the TranSouth as an at-large team. The tournament begins in Kansas City, Miisouri on March 13.
