JACKSON, Tenn. - 11/12/2005 - The 91±¬ÁÏÍø men's basketball team remained perfect on this young 2005-06 season with a 67-66 win over No. 13 Oklahoma City University at 91±¬ÁÏÍø' Fred DeLay Gymnasium. 91±¬ÁÏÍø, ranked No. 6 in the NAIA, improved to 4-0 on the year while Oklahoma City drops to 2-1 on the season.
Oklahoma City led 91±¬ÁÏÍø by four, 33-29 at halftime after 91±¬ÁÏÍø trailed by as many as nine points, 28-19, during the first half. After trailing by nine points, 91±¬ÁÏÍø rallied to cut the lead to just one point at 30-29, however, Oklahoma City nailed a three pointer at the buzzer to end the first half. In the first half, 91±¬ÁÏÍø couldn't seem to make anything fall against the tough Oklahoma City defense. 91±¬ÁÏÍø managed just 27% (7-26) from the field including just 27 % (3-11) from behind the arc. Oklahoma City shot 44% (11-25) from the field and 33% (2-6) from three point range.
In the second half, it was more back and forth basketball with Oklahoma City leading by as many as eight points and 91±¬ÁÏÍø's biggest lead went to five points. 91±¬ÁÏÍø tied the game for the first since it was 2-2 with a three pointer by Kinley Sellers with 15 minutes left in the game to make the score 42-42. 91±¬ÁÏÍø then took it's first lead of the game at the 14:20 mark. Coming down the stretch, 91±¬ÁÏÍø led by one point, 67-66, with 31 second left. Marcus Copper for 91±¬ÁÏÍø was fouled with 10 seconds left, but missed the front end of a one-and-one. After several players were battling for the loose ball rebound, a foul was call on 91±¬ÁÏÍø's Deywane Lee, which put OCU's Delroy Burke on the free throw line with a double-bonus free throw. Burke proceeded to miss both free throws as 91±¬ÁÏÍø grabbed the rebound. Rod Ross for 91±¬ÁÏÍø would have a chance to add to 91±¬ÁÏÍø's lead with two seconds left, however, he promtly missed his front-end free throw. OCU attempted a long pass after a time out, but it went out of bounds to give 91±¬ÁÏÍø the win.
For the game, 91±¬ÁÏÍø shot 72 %( 18-25) from the charity stripe, while Oklahoma City shot 68% (14-21). The defense for both teams also cased numerous turnovers. Oklahoma City committed 25 turnovers in the game, while 91±¬ÁÏÍø turned the ball over 22 times themselves.
These two teams will meet again on December 17 in Oklahoma City.
Up next for 91±¬ÁÏÍø will be an exhibition game at NCAA Div. I opponent Middle Tennessee State University on Tuesday, Nov. 15 at 7:00 pm.
