JACKSON, Tenn. - 2/11/2006 - The 91±¬ÁÏÍø Lady Bulldogs won their third game this season when playing a team ranked in the NAIA Top-5. On a snowy Saturday afternoon at Fred DeLay Gymnasium, the No. 5 ranked Lady Bulldogs defeated No. 4 ranked Trevecca Nazarene University (Tenn.) 73-62. This win for 91±¬ÁÏÍø avenged an earlier 72-66 loss at Trevecca Nazarene. With the win, 91±¬ÁÏÍø improved to 20-5 overall and 6-2 in league play. Trevecca Nazarene fell to 23-2 overall and 6-2 in the league. 91±¬ÁÏÍø and Trevecca Nazarene are now tied for second place in the TranSouth standings.
91±¬ÁÏÍø proved that they could win games by their defense, as well as, their potent offense. In the first half, 91±¬ÁÏÍø held Trevecca Nazarene to just 25 points and 29 percent shooting from the field. The Lady Bulldogs forced Trevecca into 15 first half turnovers (24 for the game). 91±¬ÁÏÍø led by 11 points, 36-35 at the break.
In the second half, 91±¬ÁÏÍø kept up the pressure as they jumped out to their biggest lead at 48-30 with 15 minutes left to play. Trevecca Nazarene slowly started to creep back into the game, as they pulled to within eight points, 70-62 with a minute left as 91±¬ÁÏÍø struggled to make free throws. However, that would be as close as the Lady Trojans would get as 91±¬ÁÏÍø stretch the lead back to the final of 73-62.
91±¬ÁÏÍø's freshman center Josephine Owino, came off the bench to lead all scorers with 23 points in the contest. She made 11-of-16 shots from the field. Jennifer Henson made 4-of-5 three pointers for her 12 points in the game. Merideth Richardson added 12 points, while Ena Daniels scored 10 points. 91±¬ÁÏÍø shot 45 percent from the field for the game and just 27 percent (6-22) from the three point line. 91±¬ÁÏÍø made just 9-of-18 (50 percent) free throws in the game.
Trevecca Nazarene was led by senior center Jackie Weaver with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Mariska Reed added 14 points, while Janna Reed and Ashlie Gilliand scored 10 points each. The Lady Trojans shot 40 percent from the field including 46 percent (6-13) from the three point range. Trevecca Nazarene also made 14-of-16 (86 percent) from the free throw line.
91±¬ÁÏÍø plays yet another ranked team on Monday night as they host No. 8 Cumberland at 6:00 pm. 91±¬ÁÏÍø topped Cumberland 64-62 in an earlier meeting at Cumberland.
