Jackson, Tenn. – November 1, 2000 – Children and
families alike will learn a lesson about the value of friendship and
sharing when 91±¬ÁÏÍø presents "The Selfish Giant," by
Gilette Elvgren, Nov. 14-17 in the G.M. Savage Memorial Chapel. An annual
event, the children's show is performed by 91±¬ÁÏÍø students for children
brought in from local and regional elementary schools. This year's
production is based on a short story by Oscar Wilde.
"The Selfish Giant" is the story of four children, played by
91±¬ÁÏÍø students Jake Bell, Andrew Holladay, Rebecca Phillips, and Abby
Thomas, who find a beautiful garden that is owned by a selfish and grumpy
giant, played by junior James Nolan. After the giant chases the children
out of his garden, winter comes and, finding it to be a cold and heartless
place, decides to take permanent residence there, threatening to kill the
garden and the giant. 91±¬ÁÏÍø students Lindsey Garner, Jimmy Hoppers and
Lauralee Moore act as winter elements. The children return to the garden
despite the threat of the giant and arrive just in time to save them both.
Numerous clowns will aid with audience participation as lessons are
learned about the value of friendship and sharing and the roles that
kindness and understanding play in breaking barriers down between people.
Tickets for the performance are $2 and can be purchased at the box
office located on campus near the G.M. Savage Memorial Chapel. All shows
are currently sold out with the exception of the 7 p.m. show, Nov. 16. For
