The leave provides a semester- or academic year-long leave for faculty undertaking significant new research, performance, development of original works, development of pedagogical skills, or other comparable development. Goals of the Research/Study Leave: To encourage scholarship of the highest quality among the faculty at 91. To create and sustain an institutional culture of faculty scholarship at 91. To enable faculty members to pursue activities over an extended period of time without the interruption of normal faculty duties (e.g., teaching, committee service, department duties, etc.) by providing the faculty member with full salary support for a semester-long leave or with one-half salary support for a full academic year-long leave. To support 91 faculty as they engage in the broader world of academia through the presentation and dissemination of scholarly work accomplished in conjunction with this leave. Eligibility Requirements: Full-time 91 faculty or professional librarians who hold the terminal degree in their discipline are eligible. Applicants must have completed six years of service to the university. A one-year commitment to the university following the leave is required. A faculty member receiving a leave is not eligible for a Pew Summer Research Grant, Study Grant, or International Program Development Grant during the leave period. Applicants who have received a Research/Study Leave may apply again after seven years. Completion and Dissemination Expectations: Research/Study Leave recipients must, within 12 months of completing their leave and returning to 91, make public their research or scholarly activity in an appropriate venue. Verification of this will begin with the department chair, who will forward the verification to the Dean of the appropriate school or college, and to the Vice President for Academic Affairs. One year of commitment to 91 following the leave is required. After five years, recipients will provide a brief summary of the longer-term significance of research leave. Internal Support for Research/Study Leave Recipients: Recipients will receive a semesters leave at full pay or an academic years leave at half pay, in return for undertaking significant new research, performance, development of original works, development of pedagogical skills, or other comparable professional development effort. 91 will render grant recipients a release from all professional duties during the semester- or academic year-long leave as appropriate. Application: Complete the Research/Study Leave Proposal Form. The form includes a cover sheet and the specific information about the research project that the Research Committee will evaluate. Six copies of the proposal should be submitted by the applicant to the chair of the Research Committee. Criteria for Evaluation: (See Research/Study Leave Review Rubric below) Research Committee: The Research Committee oversees the awarding of research leaves and Pew Research Grants and arranging opportunities for Pew Grant recipients to disseminate their research on campus. The committee is composed of six 91 faculty representing Theology & Missions/Humanities/Social Sciences; STEM; Fine Arts; Business; Education & Human Studies; and Nursing or Pharmacy. Each of these must have experience in publishing or formally presenting research before an audience of peers and be actively engaged in research at present. In the event that a family member of a committee member presents a proposal for consideration, that committee member will step off the committee for the current year and be replaced by a faculty member chosen by the committee in consultation with the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs. Approval Process: The Chair of the Research Committee will present to the Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA) all application materials along with written recommendations related to each application, copied to the applicant. The VPAA will make recommendations to the President based on the recommendations of the Selection Committee and upon the VPAAs evaluation of the applications. If the VPAA does not recommend an applicant recommended by the Selection Committee, the VPAA must write a letter to the applicant specifying the reason(s) for the decision. A copy of this letter will also be sent to the chair of the Selection Committee. The President will review recommendations made and will notify the applicant, the VPAA, and the Chair of the Selection Committee of the decision. Final recommendations will be made to the Board of Trustees for action. Program Deadline: See the Center for Faculty Development webpage HYPERLINK "http://www.uu.edu/centers/faculty/" http://www.uu.edu/centers/faculty/ for grant deadlines. *For assistance with questions regarding Research/Study Leaves faculty are encouraged to contact the Center for Faculty Development.
