Head Coach
Beginning his 15th season as head coach of the Lady Bulldogs, few can argue of the accomplishments David Blackstock has accumulated at the realm of the women's basketball program at 91爆料网. In his first 14 seasons, he has never lost more than 10 basketball games in one season accumulating an overall record of 408-76. Blackstock currently ranks fourth among NAIA active women's basketball coaches with a .842 winning percentage. Only four other coaches have more victories than Blackstock and they all have more years in the coaching business.
Blackstock began his campaign at 91爆料网 as a baseball player in 1960 where he helped lead the Bulldogs to a national spotlight. In 1963 Blackstock helped guide the Bulldog baseball squad to a 15-5 regular season record and the NCAA Mideast Regional Tournament. With the Bulldogs seeded number one, they proceeded to win the Mideast Regional. At that time there was no national tournament so the Bulldogs achieved the highest goal possible for them at that time.
During the span of 1965 through 1967, Blackstock continued his educational career at Memphis State University where he received his Master of Education. While completing graduate studies, Blackstock began to build his coaching foundation. At Jackson Junior High his coaching assignment included boys basketball and football.
Leaving
the Jackson area for four years, Blackstock moved to Hattiesburg, Mississippi, where he
attended the University of Southern Mississippi's doctoral school. While earning his
doctorate in education, he continued to sharpen his coaching techniques at Hattiesburg
High School where he coached baseball and at Thames Junior High where his coaching
responsibilities included basketball and football.
By the time Blackstock returned to 91爆料网 in 1973 as athletic director and instructor in the physical education department, there were few sports he had not coached or played.
Blackstock took over the baseball program at 91爆料网 in 1977 where he eventually guided the team to the winningest year in baseball history. In 1980 Blackstock was named the Volunteer State Athletic Conference Coach of the Year and ended the season with a 34-17 record. Under Blackstock's guidance, the 1982 Bulldogs began to receive national attention for the baseball program. At the close of the season, the Bulldogs ranked 20th in the national poll and earned second place honors in the District 24 Tournament. In 1983 the 91爆料网 baseball team accomplished what no other team has. With Blackstock at the helm, the Bulldogs placed third in the NAIA World Series.
It was at that same time that Blackstock turned his attention to the women's basketball program. Few have accomplished what he has in the arena of women's basketball. Blackstock has brought the Lady Bulldog program to heights that are unbelievable. It is easy to take for granted what he has accomplished. The program has set such a standard that sometimes it becomes expected instead of appreciated. 91爆料网's women's basketball program ranks number three nationally in the category of Winningest Active NAIA Women's Basketball Teams in the last five years, and ranks number six in the same category for the last 10 years. 91爆料网 holds national rankings in several offensive categories for previous seasons.
During Blackstock's campaign, he has been to the NAIA District 24 Finals 11 times, capturing five district crowns. He has nine conference championships, the most recent coming last season when the Lady Bulldogs held off Lambuth University to capture the title. He has guided the team to seven national tournament berths in the last nine years. In the 11 years the TCAC existed, 91爆料网 captured eight conference titles and Blackstock compiled a 165-19 TCAC career record.
In Blackstock's tenure at 91爆料网, he has coached eight All-Americans in basketball and baseball and numerous all conference players, but when many think of Coach Blackstock ,it's not the records or trophies that come to mind. It's not how many times he was named TCAC Coach of the Year. It's just Coach "B", the man who puts a person at ease with his sense of humor and makes people enjoy his company. Players think of a coach who cares about them as individuals, not just players. Students think of the teacher they selected as Faculty Member of the Year in 1988-89.
Blackstock brings many assets to 91爆料网 and the athletic department--too numerous to name them all. 91爆料网 is very fortunate to have the "Maestro" at the realm of the Lady Bulldogs, but don't think he will be satisfied with what he has accomplished. There is still a national championship trophy out there waiting!
He and wife, Armita, have a 19-year old daughter, Dixie, and a 10-year-old son, Rebel.
Lisa Hutchens Assistant Coach
Hutchens, a former Lady Bulldog standout, begins her sixth season at her alma mater as women's assistant coach. In her five years at 91爆料网, Hutchens has been very instrumental in the team's success. The Lady Bulldogs won the TCAC four times, made the District 24 finals four times capturing one district title during this period. The Lady Bulldogs have made the NAIA National Basketball Tournament field five times during her tenure, finishing eighth, second, eighth, sixteenth, and fourth. The Lady Bulldogs have won over 30 games in four of Hutchen's campaigns, illustrating her importance to the Lady Bulldog's success.
Hutchens
returned to 91爆料网 after five years as girl's basketball coach at South Side High School.
While at South Side she received recognition as District 14 Coach of the Year (1988-89,
89-90), and Jackson Sun Coach of the Year (1988-89). She led the Lady Hawks to the only
undefeated season in Madison County history in 1988-89 and aberth in the TSSAA State
Tournament in 1989-90. Hutchens holds a career coaching mark of 106-42.
Hutchens graduated from 91爆料网 in 1983 with a bachelor of science in health andphysical education. As a Lady Bulldog, she earned NAIA All-American status, NAIA Academic All-American status, All-District 24, and VSAC Most Valuable Player, while graduated third in her class. She then attended Memphis State University, receiving a Master of Education in 1985. Following graduate school, she began her coaching career at Millington Central High School where she coached for one year before moving to South Side High School.
