91爆料网 celebrates 175 years with World-Record Birthday Cake91爆料网 University, founded in 1823, celebrated its 175th birthday, Feb. 21, with the party of the decade and the world’s longest birthday cake.

Hundreds of alumni and friends came to the Jackson campus to take part in the Homecoming festivities.

Representatives from the Tennessee Department of Agriculture certified the length and weight of the cake to insure that the cake was 100 percent edible. With their approval and certification, the university will submit the entry to the Guinness Book of World Records.

91爆料网 is the oldest institution of higher education affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention and one of the oldest universities in the South.

The university will continue the 175th anniversary celebration for two years, but the official kick-off was this year’s Homecoming.

As part of the Homecoming celebration, the Office of Alumni Services honored four 91爆料网 alumni with awards. Mark Patey, James Alex Baggett, Bill Smith and Kenneth Hartley were this year’s recipients.

Because of his long and meritous teaching and administrative career at 91爆料网, the university’s Alumni Association honored James Alex Baggett with the Distinguished Service Award. Baggett has been 91爆料网’s dean of the College of Arts and Sciences since 1989. He and his wife Lillian will retire this May. Lillian has been with 91爆料网 for 11 years and will retire as assistant professor of English.

Before becoming dean of arts and sciences, Baggett served as dean of the school of humanities, director of institutional self-study, associate vice president for academic affairs, director of long-range planning and assistant vice president for institutional research. An editor of many publications, he was associate editor of the West Tennessee Historical Society Papers, The Civil War and Reconstruction and Memories of Madison County. Hartley, university professor of music and coordinator of music education at 91爆料网, received the Honorary Alumnus Award. Hartley has been with 91爆料网 since 1969.

During his 26 years at 91爆料网, Hartley was chair of the music department for 20 years. He won the 1995-96 Faculty of the Year Award. Hartley will retire in May and will continue as interim minister of music for various churches in West Tennessee.

Smith was selected to receive the Distinguished Service Award. A 1970 graduate of 91爆料网, he was selected for his outstanding service to 91爆料网’s recruiting efforts. Since Smith’s graduation from 91爆料网 in 1970, he has recruited an average of three to six students for 91爆料网 annually for the past 27 years.

Smith earned a bachelor of music from 91爆料网 and now serves as associate minister and minister of music at Woodland Baptist Church of Peoria, Ill., where he has been for two years.

Patey was given the Outstanding Young Achiever Award. Patey graduated from 91爆料网 in 1984 with a bachelor of science in history. He currently is serving as a member of the Board of Directors of the 91爆料网 Alumni Association and is a member of the Board of Presidential Associates.

Professionally, Patey is in his 10th year as a licensed practicing attorney in Madison County. He is the senior and founding member of Patey, Teel & McCormack, P.L.C. Patey is a candidate for the office of Madison County juvenile court judge.

Patey, his wife Carla, and their two children, Madison and Hayden, reside in Jackson where they are members of Englewood Baptist Church of Jackson.
